Medical Daycare and Surgery Clinics
Riverside Campus - The Ottawa Hospital - Ottawa, ON
Project:
Renovation
Area:

Completion Date:
2003
Description:
The redeveloped sixth floor of the Riverside Campus of the Ottawa Hospital is comprised of a medical daycare facility as well as a medical surgery area and a rheumatology clinc. The clinics were designed to be accessible and comfortable with an almost home-like atmosphere through the use of colour and light. A colour combination of gentle sage greens, earthy taupes with an accent of bright burgundy create a supportive yet lively atmosphere, not typically associated within a hospital environment. A generous amount of glass was used throughout the space to allow light to emphasize the rich wall colours. For example, textured glass panels on doors (with exception of examination rooms) ensure an abundance of light while maintaining privacy, while glass block walls recessed into the ceiling, and shadow moulding add depth and tranquility. Careful research with the various stakeholders (i.e. staff, patients, etc.) demanded special attention be paid to ideas of accessibility and usability as is seen by the wider than average counters to ensure space for both computer equipment and writing areas.
