The Ottawa Valley Health Centre in Pembroke, Ontario was conceived as a community ambulatory and health centre.  Located adjacent to the Pembroke Regional Hospital, the mandate of this new facility is to not only offer specialized care but to provide academic services to help encourage practices in rural health care, with an emphasis on sustainability.  Given the functional requirements and the request that this new community health centre not look "institutional", great attention was paid to design a building that is flexible and modular in plan, thereby allowing the centre to evolve as needs require, as well as using materials that not only reflect the regions heritage (ie. wood & stone), but that are durable and easy to maintain.
