Description:
A double-height atrium was the key component to the redevelopment of the Ottawa Hospital’s Critical Care Wing. Conceived as a connective element within the overall design plan, joining two building blocks, it’s generous glazing and transparency has turned the typical hospital plan “inside out”. Although separated by a floor level, the patient corridors and public corridors inhabit the same volume within the atrium, creating a dynamic atmosphere featuring both the play of light and movement. For example, a bridge spans from one side of the atrium to the other thereby creating a link between Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). By layering these circulation paths the need to create redundent hallways deep within the hospital has been reduced.
As well, given the position of the atrium, it serves as a light well delivering natural light deep within the adjacent departments of the hospital. This natural light is also used to highlight the carefully detailed material palette of the atrium. More than simply a visual delight, the intricate wood louvres and textured stone also serve as sound attenuation devices that noticably quiet this busy common area within the hospital.
